Update, updates, updates!

18 Nov

It’s been a while since my last update and I have a lot to share including a new race I just added to my calendar.  I’m running the Hyannis 1/2 marathon in February with my sister to “celebrate” her turning 30!  Let’s hope we don’t get frost bite…

First, I want to give a big shout out to my peeps - Edward and Bella Cullen.  They are like the opposite of Demi and Ashton (Edward’s the VILF in this case) but hopefully they stay together… forever… yes, pun intended.

Who else is Twilight obsessed?  I started reading their books before they turned into paperbacks and I still love them.  Well, I might love Katniss from The Hunger Games more than Bella but Edward beats Gale or Peeta any day.

Last Week Blues / Maintaining your “pillars” in life

So last week plain old stunk for me.  Nothing went right.  Not even one thing.  Plus, I neglected all of my goals for the month and ate a ton of junk food, avoided working out, slept in late but I did manage to get a lactic peel.  Priorities people.

I know we’re not going to have great weeks all the time and some weeks are just going to suck and some are going to be utterly fantastic.  I just felt so down and avoided anything and everything that could have cheered me up!

This week has been much better.  I started running again, saw some of my favorite people and overall just regained a positive mindset.

My main struggle is trying to balance work, studies, family/friends and my own well being and making sure that I am successful in all aspects.   I want to be the best sister, best daughter, best co-worker, best student, best girlfriend, best friend while staying in shape, eating healthy and allowing some me time but it’s nearly impossible.  Unless you’re Oprah and can hire people to do everything for you.

I went to this women’s networking event the other day and the main speaker was a woman by the name of Barb Reilly who is a managing partner at Arnold Worldwide.  She spoke about the need to stop attempting to “balance” your social and professional lives, and instead think of them as different pillars on which your life stands.  Some days my work life takes precedence over anything else in the moment.  Trying to give equal attention to everything is impossible.  I copied a great explanation of the four important pillars in life:

Private
You need to time for you – time to refresh and reinvigorate yourself. Part of this is keeping your body ready for the race through proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate rest. Another part is expanding your mind and lifting your spirit. You may get this in a number of ways – hobbies, art, music, literature, or religion.

Personal
You need time for the ones you love – family and friends. They give you support when you need it. They also give you a break from the pressure of the rest of your life. They are a safe harbor for any storm. Other things are important, but people’s biggest regrets often revolve around not spending enough time with family and friends.

Professional

Like most of us, you probably spend most of your time awake at work in your profession. There’s the work itself. But you also have to invest time to expand your capabilities. This will make your work more interesting, but more importantly, it will open up additional opportunities for you in the future. Failure to make this investment has left many people feeling unfulfilled in their careers.

Public
You also should give back to your community. Your community can include a number of things – your profession, your school, your city or town, and more. If you only take, you’ll miss out on the joys of giving. You’ll also jeopardize the very places that you’ve counted on to improve your life.

Inspiring!

I wanted to give a huge shout out to SkinnyRunner for running two marathons back to back.  This is ancient news in the blog world but I’m still amazed by her endurance – she is so inspiring!

Upcoming Plans

Tonight, me and Nick are going to see Straight No Chaser.  They are an all male a capella group and yes my boyfriend is going with me I might be the luckiest girl in the world ;)

I plan on starting my actual marathon training in a few weeks – wahoooooooooo!!!!  Time to get the serious face on and kick some butt.  My goal is to finish the Boston Marathon under 4 hours.  Stay tuned.

Wow I can’t believe Thanksgiving is almost here what are everyone’s plans?

Do you have any upcoming races planned?

Week in Review & Things I’m Loving Right Now

30 Oct

Workout wrap-up for the week~

  • Mon- 4 miles / 36 mins + weights (chest and tri)
  • Tues- off
  • Weds- off (felt really tired)
  • Thurs- 4 miles / 36 mins
  • Fri- off
  • Sat- 6 miles / 55 minutes
  • Sun- 6 miles / 54 minutes

Looking back at my week of working out I need to step things up.  And I definitely need to do more strength training.  How else will I be prepared to fight off all those zombies tomorrow.  Well, that’s where the “in training” comes in – I am a constant work in progress.  It’s all about daily motivation.

That’s me this AM after forcing Nick to take a picture that “looks good” (read: it was 11am not 6am and no I don’t have an excuse for my puffy eyes and awkward stance).

It’s been a while since I’ve updated my blog and I missed you guys VERY much.  I’ve been super busy (which is great) but I had no time to update my blog, stalk check up on everyone else’s blog and just have some down time.  Well today I have a lot of down time and I couldn’t be more excited!

I wanted today’s post to focus on a bunch of things I am in love with right now and maybe some of these things might interest you as well! : )

1. Poncho sweaters

Ok so I know this is more of a trendy, in-the-now fashion item of the moment BUT I’ve always loved poncho sweaters.  They’re super cozy, easy to move around in and all you do is throw it over whatever you’re wearing and bam you’re nice and warm.  It’s like a sophisticated Snuggie… sort of… not really… but whatever you get the point. I bought this poncho-esque sweater at Nordstrom Rack

2. 26.2 Apparel

Thanks to my healthy obsession with SkinnyRunner’s blog she’s got me hooked on some awesome products (Bic Bands and 26.2 Performance Apparel to name a few).  26.2 Performance Apparel has a small line of apparel but their stuff is great.  Not to mention I got an amazing coupon code from SR’s site (30% coupon code: RUNSKINNY).  Plus, they’re offering free shipping right now.  Not a bad deal huh?  Check them out here!

3. Fall Inspired Drinks

I love anything cinnamon / nutmeg / pumpkin / apple cider and right now a lot of restaurants have incorporated these ingredients into their drinks – YUM!  One of my favorite places to go in the South End is the Beehive.  I forget the name of this martini but I’m pretty sure it was on the lines of an apple cider, ginger and rum concoction:

 4. Two Moms in the Raw – Yummy Granola & Nut Bars

100% organic, 100% vegan, 100% raw delicious nut and granola bars.  Check out the amazing story behind the name:

In 2004, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After exploring all options, I found a natural approach to healing worked best for me. Food in its natural state without all the additives and pesticides is what my body needed to heal and feel good. As I continue on my personal journey to wellness I feel better each day and I know my diet has a lot to do with it. While exploring the raw lifestyle, I couldn’t find a tasty, satisfying treat to have on the run. After lots of experiments in the kitchen with other moms, I came up with delicious granola and fantastic Sea Crackers.

Pretty soon all of my friends and family were ordering more than I could afford to give away. As a result, I decided to start charging….and here we are today. From these wonderful beginnings we have benefited greatly and look forward to the future and sharing our Raw and Organic treats with you…the ones that we have already available and the many more we have yet to come up with. 5. “Martha Marcy May Marlene” movie directed by Sean Durkin

I am a big fan of Ashley and MK Olsen and when I heard about this movie on Enthusiastic Runner’s blog I had to check it out.  The movie centers around Elizabeth Olsen’s (sister of Ash and MK and also the inspiration behind the amazing Elizabeth and James line) character Martha and how she to struggles from leaving a cult that left her emotionally and physically damaged. LOVE LOVE LOVE and I cannot wait to see it.

Check out the trailer here:

6. Sex on the Moon: The Amazing Story Behind the Most Audacious Heist in History written by Ben Mezrich

I need to read this.  Most of Mezrich’s books have turned into (or will turn into) movies so his books play out almost like manuscripts but who cares his books are unreal.  He is the author of Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions (inspired the movie 21), The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal (inspired the movie The Social Network) and Ugly Americans: The True Story of the Ivy League Cowboys Who Raided the Asian Markets for Millions.

Brief Week in Review~

Overall, I was busy with work and work annnnnnnnd work.  Got to see one of my good friends. And then it snowed.  All. Freaking. Night. on Saturday when we were supposed to go up to NH for a Halloween party.  Decided against driving up north (where the weather was much worse) and stayed local and went to my sister’s Halloween bash.  I was a “Redskin Native American” and Nick was a preppy tennis pro – awwww aren’t we the cuuuutest.  haha jk!!!!  I will have post pics later this week!

How was everyone’s weekend?

What I Learned at a Local Dairy Farm

23 Oct

Good evening y’all!

Confession: I wished I had a southern drawl rather than an annoying Boston accent (R’s and O’s don’t exist in my alfabit cuz I wicked smaaaat).  To give you a better idea here are some convo’s from this weekend: “Nick I left my keys in your cahh… wahhh” or better “I ran pretty fahh in South Baston wicked pissah”.  Well I don’t say ‘wicked pissah’ but I thought it  would make me sound cooler on here.  Ugh gosh darn Boston accent whyyyy can’t I sound smaht and fool people!!!!

Anyway.

So today I met up with my little sister Kayla (not my real sister).  I’ve been Kayla’s Big for over 2 years now.  For those who don’t know much about the Big Brother / Big Sister program it’s an amazing way to be a positive mentor for a younger boy or girl.  There are many opportunities within BBBS whether you decide to just donate or become a Big I am a BIG (pun intended) advocate for this program.

Speaking of being an advocate, that’s the number one thing I love about the BBBS’s mission~ to be an advocate for a child not a disciplinarian.  God only knows the struggles they are going through and hanging out with them whether it’s going for a hike, see a movie, bake cookies, etc. the time you spend with him or her is worth more than anything.

Today, Kayla and I went hiking at Great Brook Farm in Carlisle.  Carlisle might be one of the prettiest towns in MA.  Fun facts about Carlisle:

  • Carlisle does not have any shopping plazas, apartment complexes or traffic lights
  • Approximately 25% of the town is protected conservation land
  • One of Carlisle’s neighboring towns includes Concord home of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson and Louisa Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne.  Concord has some of the most historic spots in MA including the Orchard House, the Old Manse, the Old North Bridge, Minuteman National Historic Park, Emerson House, and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

Some highlights of our trip today (I’ll use pictures to tell the story):

Read about this amazing piece of milking technology here!

2 day old baby calf - what a cute little nugget!!!!

To back track one day, on Saturday Nick and I met up with some friends and fam at the UMASS vs UNH football game~

Much better spread than last year’s 1 bag of chips shared amongst too many ravenous alcohol induced kids.

Thank you Marie!!! :)

Clearly, I was more interested in the marching bands.  Football?  Sayyy what? Check out those tubas!

How was everyone’s weekend?

Have you been to a dairy farm before?  Ever see one of those high-tech milking gadgets?

Morning Run and Football!

22 Oct

Workout 8 miles / 1:15

I am far from a morning person but I was able to get my butt out of bed and run with my sister this morning.  We met up at Castle Island around 7:45 am and went for a run (sorry no pics to share)!

The run was actually very relaxing and started my day off just right.

Got home, showered and ate one of my favorite things: toasted sesame bagel with peanut butter and bananas (and a glass of apple cider).  YUM.

Yesterday, I had a day off from work and did a “me day” with one of my girlfriends.  One thing I was able to get done was get a manicure-my poor thin cracked nails needed some desperate help.

And I cleaned the apartment for a bit, went shopping (HAH go figure what is WRONG with me!!!!), attempted to nap and then finished off the night watching another episode of Dexter and then watched Beetlejuice <– ABC family has the best Halloween movies right now.  Just thought you should all know.

Later this afternoon, me and Nick are meeting up with friends to tailgate and watch the UMASS vs UNH football game at Gillette.  We went last year and it was so much fun.

No idea what our friend is doing on the right but I’m sure there’s a good explanation.

Later tonight, we’re going out to celebrate one of my good friend’s birthdays.  Busy day but an exciting one at that!

Some things I’m curious about:

Do you like to workout in the morning, afternoon or evening?  How do you motivate yourself to get moving?

Football fan?  Who is your favorite team?

Buyers Remorse and Baked Oatmeal

20 Oct

Workout 4 miles (yesterday) <– I was totally going to run today but I went shopping…

After work today I felt like some retail therapy.  Shopping really does the body good.

I ventured to Marshalls (one of my all time favorite inexpensive stores).  They have the best variety of clothes, shoes, home decor and other misc. things.  While I love Anthropologie, Anne Taylor, Club Monaco, Banana Republic and J.Crew my wallet’s not feeling the same kind of love.

For $200, here’s what I bought at Marshalls:

-Marc Jacobs down winter jacket

-Work dress

-Boots

-Kitchen things

-Jewelry holder

When I got home, I felt some buyers remorse but it dissipated after taking everything out of the bags and showing off my new stuff…

For the same amount I could bought  1 sweater at J.Crew or a pair of socks at Anthropologie so I think I made out well.

Tonight, I decided to experiment with baked oatmeal.  I love oatmeal especially steel-cut oatmeal for the nutty texture.

I soaked the oats over night and then mixed an egg , almond milk, brown sugar, cinnamon and dried cranberries with the oats and filled two small casserole dishes.  I baked them for about 40 minutes~

Not too bad but I think I might stick to plain old oats with yogurt.

Off to watch my favorite show before I pass out!

How is everyone’s week going?

Boston Peeps: did you hear that they are making a “Real Housewives of South Boston” – what are your thoughts on that?

Monday Schmonday

17 Oct

Workout 45 mins elliptical (Level 9 / Intervals)

I was going to work on my “chest and tris” today but the gym in our complex is teeny tiny and there were two hardcore fitness gurus all over the weights.  I’ll get to those darn weights tomorrow : )

Still deciding between getting a gym membership / personal trainer vs. crossfit but eh Christmas is coming up…

I’m pretty excited about this next thing–I joined the “L Street Running Club” to help with those longer runs (read: 22 miles) come early next year.

Is it sad that I already eyed a sweat-shirt I want to buy through them?

L St Hoodie

I love hoodies and any excuse I can use to buy one well I am all over it.

So this past weekend I was cooking away and I burned my hand…

Owies

Not sure if this picture does it enough justice.  I hit my hand on the upper rack in the oven and this is what I get!  I’ve been putting neosporin on it a couple of times per day… hope it doesn’t leave a nasty scar.

Tonight, I got sucked into this show called “The Sing Off“.  Great.  Like I need another show in my DVR box.  And apparently it’s in its second season?  Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men HEY NOW) and Sara Bareilles are judges.  Has anyone been watching this show???  I love A Cappella groups and yes I listen to All A Cappella.  Not sure I’ll be able to watch this show regularly.  I’m too busy catching up with Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, It’s Always Sunny, Happy Endings, Revenge, The Secret Circle, Jersey Shore (not ashamed), Four Weddings, Bar Rescue… and… I’m gonna stop with the list I sound like a loser and a show addict.

I made a delicious mush of randomness tonight and it tasted soooo good.

I mixed some Piccolini Vegetable Pasta with home-made sauce and corn – YUM : )

And nothing like Apple Cider on the side.

How was everyone’s weekend?

What’s everyone’s favorite show right now?
